Capital Property Group is thrilled to announce the pre-commitment of the Commonwealth Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (the Department) to lease 46,500sqm in the new $500 million London Central development in the Canberra CBD.

London Central will deliver contemporary, fit for purpose office accommodation for the Department, which will also host the Department of Education, reinforcing the Government’s long term presence in the nation’s capital and its confidence in central Canberra as Australia’s civic and administrative heart.

Reflecting the Government’s commitment to creating efficient, sustainable and future-ready workplaces, the buildings have been designed to meet contemporary sustainability standards and will deliver a high-performance workplace with a reduced environmental impact. The development incorporates modern design principles that support collaboration, wellbeing and productivity for the public service.

The office accommodation will feature all-electric plant, carbon neutral in operation, roof top solar and will target a 5.5-star NABERS energy rating setting a new benchmark for environmental sustainability and adhering to the Commonwealth Government’s recently announced Net Zero policy for all new workplaces.

Designed by acclaimed architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker (JPW), the development will feature three buildings contributing versatile urban spaces organised around a central urban park flanked by dynamic food and beverage outlets.

By locating the development in the heart of the CBD, the project will support economic activity, strengthen local businesses and contribute to the ongoing renewal and vibrancy of central Canberra as a major employment and services hub.

Richard Snow, Group Head of Property, Capital Property Group said “following an extensive market tender process the commitment by the Department to London Central marks a major milestone for the project and is a huge vote of confidence in the project’s design, functionality and offering.”

“The development will offer modern, flexible workspaces and amenities designed to support productivity, collaboration, and employee well-being. This approach highlights the importance of physical workplaces in fostering innovation, creativity and professional networks. With new workspaces acting as an enabler for cultural change.”

A key highlight of this development is its commitment to sustainability and architectural excellence. Capital Property Group, known for successful projects such as the Canberra Airport precinct, Denman Prospect and Constitution Place, aims to continue a commitment to excellence and building quality in this prominent site for Canberra.

Richard Snow added “As a Canberra based asset management and development company with a proud track record of over 50 years of investment in Canberra this commitment by the Department  is a huge vote of confidence in the capability and capacity of our team at Capital Property Group to deliver such a significant project.”

London Central has received development approval, and construction has already commenced on site by local Canberra building firm Construction Control. Completion of the building is expected in early 2030.
